How to get healthy, soft and shiny hair
These methods reported by the British newspaper The Guardian will help you keep your hair in good condition:
Hold your hair gently while washing and drying.
The way you treat your hair makes a huge difference in its texture and appearance. When you are harsh with your hair it can get frizzy and look dull. Hair is a fragile material and you are supposed to handle it with care, like a delicate piece of cloth. Here's what you should keep in mind:
- When using shampoo, do not scrub it harshly. Massage the shampoo into your hair and spread it with your fingers.
- Rinse your hair in the coldest water you can handle. Cold heat helps your hair look shiny, while hot water will cause frizz and a dull appearance.
- Gently squeeze the water out of your hair and pat it dry with a towel instead of twisting and wringing it.
Use shampoo a few times a week.
Using shampoo daily dries out your hair and makes it brittle. The natural oil of your scalp produces to nourish your hair that is rinsed out before it does its job. If you want to keep your hair healthy and shiny, you really only need to wash it once or twice a week.
- When you initially reduce the number of times you wash your hair, you may notice that your hair looks greasy than usual. Your scalp produces excessive oil because it is used to daily washing. After a week or two things will balance out and your hair will look cleaner and longer.
- On days between washes, when you need to condition your hair, use dry shampoo. It is a powder that you sprinkle on your hair to absorb the oil, and it works like magic.
Let your hair air dry instead of using heat.
The ideal way to keep your hair healthy is to let it dry naturally instead of using a hair dryer. Heat from a hair dryer damages hair strands, and if you use it daily you will definitely see damage over time. Skip the hair dryer and let your hair dry naturally.
- The same goes for heat styling tools, such as curling irons, hair straighteners and hot rollers.
- On days when you really want to use a blow dryer or other styling tools, apply a heat protectant serum to your hair so it doesn't get too damaged.
Comb your hair instead of brushing it.
Running a plastic bristle brush through your hair, especially if it's wet, will almost certainly guarantee some damage. Brushing tends to rip your hair, while combing removes tangles without pulling the hair. Use a wide-tooth comb and start detangling near the ends, moving up toward the roots.
Do not use damaging treatments.
Coloring, bleaching, chemical straightening, and chemical perming of your hair all damage the hair shaft. For the healthiest hair possible, it is best to stop these treatments and let your hair take on its natural color and texture. Your hair color may not be exactly what you wanted, but it will still be healthy, shiny and silky.
- If you want to dye your hair, look for dye with henna, honey, or tea. These natural dyes actually restore shine to your hair, instead of damaging it. You won't be able to get a dramatic color change, but you will get slightly lighter or darker shades.
Stay away from restrictive hairstyles that pull the hair.
Waves, braids, and some other styles that require constantly pulling your hair into a tight position can cause damage and hair loss. While some types of fabric are less damaged than others (for example, stitched fabric is usually better than glued). Your hair will be healthier if you avoid all of these styles.
Use conditioner after every time you use shampoo.
Use just enough to cover your hair strands without weighing it down. Apply the conditioner 2.5 cm away from the roots and use a wide-toothed comb to comb through to the ends. Rinse off the conditioner with warm or lukewarm water for a shiny finish.
- If your hair tends to get very dry, try using a leave-in conditioner as well. Apply conditioner after getting out of the shower, while your hair is still wet. It will keep your hair soft and flexible until your next shampoo.
Do deep moisturizing treatment every few weeks.
Deep conditioning treatments are a great way to make your hair look softer and shinier. Since the treatments are so effective, you will only need to do them once a week or two. Use store-bought conditioners or homemade oils such as coconut oil, olive oil, or almond oil. Complete the treatment as follows:
- Wet your hair and apply about a tablespoon of deep conditioner. Use a wide-toothed comb to distribute the conditioner through your hair.
- Put your hair up in a high bun or ponytail at the top of your head. Cover your hair with a hat or plastic wrap.
- Leave the conditioner in your hair for at least an hour and up to eight.
- Shampoo your hair as usual to remove excess conditioner.
Try a homemade hair mask.
On days when you don't have time to deep condition but want to give your hair an extra boost, try using an at-home product to enhance the texture and appearance of your hair. After wetting your hair in the shower, apply a hair mask. Wash it off with shampoo at the end of your shower. Here are homemade masks to make your hair shiny and silky:
- A tablespoon of honey or one egg white
- A whipped banana or avocado
- One tablespoon of milk or yogurt
- A mixture of any of the ingredients above
Be healthy inside and out.
Your diet and other healthy habits have a big impact on your hair texture. When you eat plenty of protein, nutrients, and healthy fats, your hair will look healthy and shiny. When you don't, your hair is the first place it will show up. See how your hair will improve when you do the following:
- Eat food that contains protein, omega-3 fatty acids and iron. Salmon, sardines, avocados, nuts, and flaxseeds are all excellent for promoting your hair growth.
- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. When you're not hydrated, your hair can end up dry and brittle.
- Stay away from smoking cigarettes. Smoke can make your hair look dull and dry.
Use natural hair products.
The ingredients in your shampoo and conditioner may make your hair appear dry and dull instead of shiny and silky. Go for all-natural shampoos and moisturizers that nourish your hair instead of stripping it of its shine and making it dull. Here's what you use:
- Choose sulfate-free shampoo. Sulfur is a harsh detergent used in everything from dish soap to laundry detergent, and people are starting to realize that it's not very good for hair. Look for shampoos labeled “sulfate-free” and made with natural cleansers.
- Choose a silicone-free conditioner. Silicone is added to the conditioner because it makes the hair appear shiny and soft after applying it the first few times. Unfortunately, over time it builds up in your hair and makes it look limp and dull. It is best to stay away from options with silicone.
Useful ideas
- Sleep on silk or satin pillowcases. This cover can help prevent tangles and knots. It may also reduce cracking during sleep. Plus, these pillows are so comfortable and soft!
- Use hair masks. If you're trying to grow your hair, use these from once a week to once a month. Take one mashed banana and put it in a bowl. Add one raw egg to it, then add 3 tablespoons of milk. Finally, add 3 tablespoons of white honey. Mix well. Apply this to your scalp and hair, leave it for 30 minutes, rinse and wash your hair as usual. You can also try adding two raw eggs in a bowl, adding 5 tablespoons of olive oil, mixing them well, and applying them to your scalp. Wear a shower cap, leave for 30 minutes, rinse, and wash your hair as usual.
- Put your hair in a bun/braid/ponytail on windy days.
- Drink plenty of water every day.
- Always rinse your hair after swimming in the shower, because chlorine is harmful to your hair.
- Wrap your hair up in a towel when wet to dry quickly and avoid using hair dryers.
- Deep moisturizing treatments are beneficial for dry hair.
- In the final rinse after using shampoo and conditioner, wash your hair with cold water, as it can give you shiny hair.
Warnings
- Do not use products that are too harsh for your hair type.
- Stay away from coloring your hair. Coloring your hair is harmful to it. Harmful dyes and chemicals can lead to dryness and breakage of hair. Try using box dye or temporary dye if coloring is necessary. These can give you fun colors while not causing damage to your hair. Bleaching is especially harmful. You can dye your hair once in a while, just not permanently.
- Do not use heat tools on your hair daily, because heat is very damaging to your hair. Curling irons, hair straighteners, blow dryers, flat irons, basically any heat tool you use on your hair will damage your hair in the long run. Avoid using them permanently and choose hairstyles that are free of heat and air-drying your hair. Squeeze excess water out of your hair after soaking, and pat dry with a clean towel.
